What is the Lifespan of Solar Panels Sunshine Coast

Both domestic solar installation and commercial solar installation have seen a dramatic increase in popularity over recent years. Striving to reduce one’s carbon footprint is as much of a modern concern as is reducing one’s energy bills. One of the main questions people ask is how long solar panels last. Of course, this question comes with a number of factors to consider. Logic Solar is here to answer this and other questions on solar energy.

Quality of the Product

Let’s start with the basic answer. Modern Solar panels should have a lifespan of around twenty-five years or even longer. It is also true that recent advances in production technology have meant that solar panels are now more durable than ever. However, as with most new products, the quality from brand to brand can fluctuate.

The panels we choose to work with are high quality from trusted global brands, such as these industry leading blue chip panels: Hyundai 390W M3+ Perc Shingled UF Series Panel  - these panels have a twenty-five-year product and performance warranty. One of our favourites is the SunPower Maxeon 6 AC with Inbuilt Enphase Micro Inverters. These top end panels carry an unbeatable 40 Year product & performance warranty, and an impressive 25 year warranty on the micro inverters when combined with the Sunpower panels.

Our Clean Energy Council accredited installers ensure quality in both knowledge and the products with which we work. We do not sell low- or entry-level products.

What Causes Solar Panels to Deteriorate?

By their very nature, solar panels are exposed to the elements. With the sun comes rain, hail, wind and other extreme Australian weather, and with our beautiful beaches here on the Sunshine Coast we are exposed to high levels of salt mist, which is highly corrosive. After the quality of the product, the environment has the greatest potential to shorten the lifespan of your solar panels. The good news is that high quality products combined with regular maintenance can help mitigate these problems.

Solar panels don’t require much maintenance. However, you will want to clean away dirt and other debris somewhat regularly. In addition, we recommend having one of our solar professionals inspect your system once per year. This ensures maximum working efficiency, along with ensuring the safety of your family and home is maintained.

Other Factors to Consider

Beyond the two main factors mentioned above, there are a handful of others that may affect the lifespan of your solar panels. Potential-induced degradation (PID), light-induced degradation (LID) and cold or low temperature degradation are all matters you may like to discuss with the team at Logic Solar before going ahead with either residential or commercial solar installation.

Our team of installation professionals and sales support staff provides clients with all the help you need, helping to ensure that your solar panels will last for as long as is technologically possible.

Call Logic Solar today on 1300 068 468 to request more information on the longevity of solar panels.

How to Look After Your Solar Panels Sunshine Coast

Although they generally require very little maintenance, as with any electrical equipment, your solar panels must see regular upkeep. This ensures that your system runs as safely and efficiently as possible. First, you need to know how to make sure this happens. Logic Solar can help. We’ve addressed some common maintenance-related concerns below.

Solar Panel Suppliers Sunshine Coast

The most important aspect of maintaining a solar panel system is cleaning. The good news is that rain can help wash away much of the dirt build-up from the modules. However, there is a bit more involved. Regular maintenance should make sure that:

  • panels are both clean and secure

  • there are no defects

  • there are no signs of corrosion

  • vents are free of debris

  • all wirings, fittings and cables are operating properly

Why Do Solar Panels Need Maintenance?

At the mercy of the weather, your solar panels may accumulate dust and debris over time. There’s also the possibility that other elements have the potential to cause your panels to deteriorate or become damaged. Sunlight, wind, hail, vermin and water seepage can all negatively affect the regular function of your system.

Considerations beyond safety include the efficiency of your system. Regular maintenance will ensure that your solar panel system will perform as efficiently as possible, allowing you to save more on your power bills.

Who Should Perform Solar Panel Maintenance?

One of the many upsides to having solar panels installed is the relatively low maintenance that is required. When it comes to cleaning, most people can carry out the basics with a hose or leaf blower. A proper routine check should, however, be carried out twice yearly. We do not recommend climbing up onto your roof. Leave this high risk work to the experts - all of our installers have carried out extensive training both with electrical equipment and at heights to prevent damage to your roof panels or tiles, solar panels, electrical cabling and most importantly - yourself!

One important factor to monitor is that any trees surrounding your solar panels that can cast shading or drop leaf debris onto the panels need to be regularly pruned, as this can affect system performance dramatically, and may even damage your solar panels by creating hot spots, which can cause rapid degradation of the panels.

Solar Power Specialists Sunshine Coast

Logic Solar systems are purposely designed to minimise debris and therefore, the amount and frequency of maintenance required. To ensure your solar panel system is working as safely and efficiently as possible, we recommend annual servicing. Contact our team of solar power specialists Sunshine Coast who will answer any questions you may have regarding installation or the best ways to maintain your solar system.

How to Choose the Right Solar System Sunshine Coast

When choosing a solar system, there are many variables to consider. Each residential home or commercial building has different energy requirements according to various factors. As such, it makes sense to understand the basics. For this and answers to more complicated questions related to solar power, read on or contact Logic Solar today.

On Grid Solar System

An on-grid solar system is one that is connected to the utility grid. The energy produced by your solar panel system is routed to the grid which is then used to power your home or commercial property’s various appliances. A solar inverter converts the direct current (DC) energy generated by your panels into alternating current (AC) electricity used by the grid.

The benefit of an on-grid system means energy bills are either dramatically reduced or eliminated completely. Additionally, as an on-grid system doesn’t require the use of batteries for storage and has few moving parts, maintenance is quite simple.

Hybrid Grid Solar System

Hybrid solar systems are tied to the grid but also have batteries for storage. Your solar panels remain connected to the grid's power lines but the batteries are there to store excess power the system has generated. A solar inverter will still convert DC to AC energy as with the on-grid system. The difference is that the spare energy can be stored and used in your home, exported to the grid or stored in your batteries for backup protection.

The most obvious benefit of a hybrid solar system is the ability to access stored power for use when the sun is not shining, or if you need more power than what is being produced. In a typical household, energy requirements are highest at night when everyone is home. During these times, your system can draw power stored in the batteries. If all the power in the batteries is used, the system then accesses the grid. This ensures you get the most savings from your system but also have access to energy at all times.

Solar Power Sunshine Coast: Which Should I Choose?

The solar panel system you choose will depend upon your unique needs as a household or commercial property. Logic Solar recommends getting in touch with our experienced support staff or one of our Clean Energy Council-accredited solar installers or designers to help you make the choice that is right for you.

Questions to Ask Your Solar Installer Sunshine Coast

To the question, “Is installing solar panels a good idea?” The answer is a simple “yes”. There are numerous reasons for this, including a minimised environmental impact and an equally beneficial effect on the cost of electricity. However, before you go ahead and invest in the cost of a solar panel system, there are other questions you should ask. One of the premier solar companies Sunshine Coast residents count on is Logic Solar. Read on or contact our team today.

Solar Power Specialists Sunshine Coast

Logic Solar has installed thousands of PV solar systems throughout Queensland and New South Wales. Backing our expert, Clean Energy Council-accredited installers is an experienced team on hand to answer any questions you may have before, throughout and after the installation process. Here we explore a few questions you should ask your solar installer, and why.

What Performance Level Can I Expect from this System?

The performance of a solar panel system is measured in kWh. An average daily kWh production figure seems like a good way to measure output. However, it doesn’t consider the potential ups and downs, such as those caused by fluctuating weather conditions. You should ask your solar panel installer for a detailed, month-by-month breakdown. This will ensure that you can accurately predict the adequacy of your power output all year round. By installing a Smart Meter, you can monitor live energy production, consumption and exportation via a smart phone app (such as Fronius Solar.Web) or online. See an example of the Fronius monitoring system installed at our Logic Solar showroom in action here

Are There any Hidden Costs?

Some solar companies in Sunshine Coast will charge extra for things not originally quoted. One such example might be a meter box or switchboard upgrade. You may or may not need a meter upgrade before a solar panel system can be installed. Ask your installer to include this and any other potential expenses before signing a contract. For this reason, we recommend a site visit before we send out your quote, to assess the suitability of your home for solar, quote you relevant products, and discuss your energy needs not only now, but in the foreseeable future.

Ask Your Installer’s Payment Terms

A reputable installer like Logic Solar will have payment plan options for clients who may not want to pay the full sum upfront. While it certainly makes financial sense in the long run, many households may find the initial cost a bit of a challenge to pay in full straight away. Logic Solar can provide you with industry leading solar finance options, and also provide information on government rebates you may be entitled to.

How Do I Know Your Work Will be Quality?

This is perhaps the most important question. Ask your installer if they have recognised certification and experience. Our team of Clean Energy Council accredited experts have assisted thousands of people throughout Queensland and New South Wales to save money on their power bills.

Logic Solar is a CEC Approved Retailer, and our Director Tom Hassard is a fully Licenced Master Electrician, CEC Accredited Solar & Battery installer & designer, and a certified partner with these industry leading solar brands:

Solar Energy Sunshine Coast: When Will I Start Saving Money?

With hiking energy costs comes a demand for ways to combat them. For the average household or commercial enterprise, the best way to do so is by installing solar panels. The question, “Can solar panels save me money?” has now been replaced with “How soon can solar panels start saving me money?”. Logic Solar is one of the premier solar companies Sunshine Coast residents know and trust, and we are here to answer this important question.

Solar Panels Sunshine Coast

As the name implies and residents will know, the Sunshine Coast sees its fair share of sun. The good news is there for everyone to see where solar power is concerned. Further afield, Australia has the highest solar radiation per square metre of any of Earth’s continents. As a result, we enjoy some of the best solar energy resources in the world.

Most homes are single phase power, and although there are some single phase properties with solar panel systems of up to 13kW (kilowatts), most households operate a system of 6.6 kilowatts or less. A 5-kilowatt system will generate about 20 kilowatts of energy per day on average. This generally meets the average Australian household’s needs of between 16 and 20 kilowatts per day. Assuming you pay your electricity company the average tariff of between 26 and 30 cents per kilowatt, you can expect to save between $5 and $10 per day by using solar panels.

Solar Battery Prices Australia

What comes next in determining how soon you can start saving money by installing solar panels is the start-up cost. At Logic Solar, we do not sell lower entry-level products. While cheap, these won’t last as long and certainly won’t come with the warranty of the products our experienced installers prefer. Additionally, they will likely not be as efficient, meaning you don’t save as much off your power bill as you could and need to replace them sooner. This results in fewer savings and defeats the purpose and cost of installation, not to mention cause you unneeded stress when they don’t work.

As we are dealing with high voltage appliances - it is a smart decision to go with safe, trusted and reliable brands that gives you peace of mind for both you, your family and your most valuable asset - your home!

We custom design our solar systems to meet the evolving needs of your family or business - we do not have a “one size fits all” approach, or have hidden costs that come up during the installation. Our Site Visits before we quote ensure we have all of the relevant information before we provide you with a quote.

If you are building a new home, we request Building Plans so that we can design the system around the DA approved specifications of your new Build.

Solar Companies Sunshine Coast

There are variables such as the tariff imposed by your current energy provider and your specific daily needs but generally, a household solar panel system can pay for itself in three to five years. Considering the minimum panel warranty we offer is 25 years, that is a solid return on your investment. Logic Solar recommends getting in touch, so our support staff and solar installers can help you break down the specifics. We can then provide you with a solution that will have you saving money as soon as possible.

Have You Ever Wondered How a Solar Energy System Works?

Solar panel systems have seen a dramatic upturn in popularity over recent years. They’ve become more affordable and solar panels with battery storage mean you can store excess energy until you need it. People have also become more aware of the benefits of using them, especially in the face of rising energy costs and the increasing interest in reducing our carbon footprint. What may not be so obvious is how they work. Logic Solar, experts in solar power Sunshine Coast, gives you a basic rundown.

Common On Grid Solar System v Hybrid Grid Solar System

A common on-grid solar system is connected to the utility grid. The energy produced by your solar panel system is used to power your home or commercial property, and any unused power is exported back to the grid. A solar inverter converts the direct current (DC) energy generated by your panels into alternating current (AC) electricity used by your home, and by the electricity grid.

Hybrid solar systems work the same way as a common solar system - they are grid-tied but they have special inverters and a battery to store energy for use later. Solar panels with battery storage remain connected to the grid, but the batteries store excess power generated by the system. The solar inverter will still convert DC to AC energy as with the on-grid system. The difference is that energy can now be used in your home, exported to the grid or stored in your batteries.

Not all solar batteries are the same - there are different types of solar batteries. Logic Solar can assess your home and energy needs to determine what type and size is the best option for your home or business.

Some batteries such as a Tesla Powerwall - which is an “AC coupled battery,” have a built in inverter. This means that a traditional standalone DC string inverter is not required, the Powerwall can be connected directly to your solar panels.

DC coupled batteries can only be connected to a hybrid “battery ready” inverter.

The main difference between DC and AC batteries is that in the event of a power outage - once fully discharged, a DC battery can recharge via the solar panels, whereas an AC battery cannot.

One of the best DC batteries available on the market is the BYD Battery Box, which works seamlessly with the Fronius Gen 24 Plus hybrid inverter, Smart Meter & Solar.Web monitoring.

Off-grid systems are standalone. They require specialised off-grid inverters and battery systems large enough to store energy for multiple days at a time.

How Solar Panels Make Electricity

With the difference between the types of systems briefly covered, let’s break down the steps involved in how your solar panels make electricity.

  • Sunlight hits the solar panels, and their photovoltaic cells absorb it

  • Within each cell is a thin semiconductor made of two layers of silicon which form an electric field

  • Electric current is created upon sunlight hitting the cells, separating electrons from atoms.

  • Electric current is created by these electrons and the field surrounding the silicon.

  • The solar inverter converts the DC energy created into usable AC

  • This AC energy is used to power your household or commercial property

  • Your monitoring system will measure both input and energy expenditure so you can keep track of your energy production and consumption, and allow you to optimise your energy consumption habits

Correctly Sizing Your Solar System Sunshine Coast

The average three-bedroomed household uses about 6,500kWh of energy per year, but what does that mean in terms of the size you need? When choosing a solar system to suit the unique needs of your home or commercial property, size matters, and Logic Solar can help. We suggest talking to your energy supplier or checking your last three bills to get an accurate estimate of your energy consumption. We can then advise on the best solar energy solution for you.

Solar Power Specialists Sunshine Coast

The “size” of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system refers to its maximum output of electricity. What matters is the overall capacity and not the number of panels used.

Most households operate a system of 5 kilowatts. This will generate about 20 kilowatts of energy per day and meet the average Australian household’s needs of between 16 and 20 kilowatts per day.

The above can vary, however. For example, if you’re living by yourself in a residential property, you may only use 8-12kWh per day. In contrast, those living in a household with five people may use 30-40kWh per day. Other factors that will impact energy requirements include using gas for cooking, high energy consumption items such as Pool heating, Air Conditioning systems, EV chargers and many other variables. When it comes to commercial properties, the variables become further complicated.

Planning for Change

Seasonal usage will vary, with air conditioners being used in summer or heaters during winter. So too will usage at certain times of the day. For example, a family that goes to work and school for the day won’t be around to consume much power but will use more at night, when energy companies often charge higher rates (known as Peak periods). These factors will help to determine your maximum requirements. It’s also best that, rather than exported to the grid, your system stores power generated during the day to use at night.

Future change is also a consideration. Whether you’re planning on adding to the family, adding to the house, or even getting an electric car and installing an EV charger, there are many reasons why your energy needs could increase. Therefore, it’s a good idea to think ahead and invest in a larger system now, as this will make it easier to expand later.

In all cases, Logic Solar recommends having one of our professional installers or experienced staff advise you on the best solution for your needs.

Call Logic Solar today on 1300 068 468 to discuss the right sized solar system for your household or commercial property.

The Process of Solar Installation Sunshine Coast

Once you’ve decided to take advantage of the benefits of installing solar panels for your commercial property or at home, the staff at Logic Solar can guide you through what happens next. We’ll help you choose products that suit your needs and ensure you the maximum efficiency at a competitive price. After that, it’s installation time! The following is a breakdown of what you can expect during the installation process from Logic Solar, the solar installer Sunshine Coast residents know and trust.

Where Solar Panels are Installed

Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels work best when they are placed under direct sunlight. Efficiency is maximised by ensuring they see the midday sun. It is for this reason that they are typically either positioned on rooftops or standalone facilities. Either way, the best position for your solar panels will be a space where there are as few items as possible to cast shadows upon them. Logic Solar use specialised software to design your panel layout to ensure maximum performance. This includes having them at the right angle or pitch, and facing in the best direction. Each property is different depending on the roof aspect, size of the available roof space, and many other factors.

Before Installation

Before your solar panels are installed, your professional solar panel installer and solar design team will help you decide what you need. Each home or commercial property is unique and therefore, has different requirements. In turn, these requirements will help determine the size of the system you need and the equipment required. More specifically, once the wattage requirement has been established, then you’ll know the size of the inverter, panels, racking and wiring needed to suit.

Time for Installation

Once your solar components have been ordered and are in stock, the actual installation process from Logic Solar will involve the following steps:

  • Check measure by our supervisor to confirm layout and location of the inverter, and roof space access for cabling

  • Racking installation: the support structure that fixes your solar panels to your roof will be positioned so that your solar panels face in the optimal direction

  • Wiring and switch gear are installed

  • Solar panel installation: installing the solar panels themselves, during which each panel will be fixed into place on the racking, and connected to the wiring

  • The Inverter, isolators and wiring are installed and connected to your meter board

  • Solar Safety Switch and Smart Meter are installed in the switchboard

  • Solar panels are connected to the inverter

  • The system is tested and connected to the grid

  • Once all the above steps have been completed, the inverter will be switched on allowing you to monitor the generation and usage of solar units

  • Our installers will walk you through emergency shut off procedure and set up the monitoring app with you and show you how to use it

  • We will instruct Energex, so that your energy provider can come out and install a solar power meter that will allow exportation of power back to the grid

Once the installation has been completed, we will register your new system with the Clean Energy Council and Clean Energy Regulator, register your warranty and update the firmware on your inverter (where possible), send you all of the documentation for your new system, and schedule a complimentary health check in six months time to see how your system is performing in relation to your first energy bill.

Our support does not end there! The friendly team at Logic Solar are available to help you for the life of your system - no questions asked.

All You Need to Know About Solar Batteries & Inverters

If you’re looking into installing solar panels you will have heard of inverters, optimisers, smart meters and solar panels with battery storage. It can be a little difficult to understand what these components are, why you need them, and which type and size you need. Logic Solar is here to break it down for you.

Why You Want a Battery

There are a handful of reasons why you may want to attach batteries to your solar system. The main two reasons are to store energy for use at night and Time of Use (ToU) tariffs (also known as Peak usage).

Firstly, a battery allows you to store energy to use when the sun goes down. You’ll pay less because you will be importing less energy from the grid.

The second reason is Time of Use (ToU) tariffs. Without a battery, you’ll get charged a higher rate by your energy provider during peak usage times and end up with a higher energy bill as a result. Energy providers may charge up to five times more to use energy during peak periods than what they credit you for exported solar energy.

With the rising cost of energy, and future uncertainty around climate change, installing a battery now will allow you to “future proof” your home or business in an environmentally responsible way, by harnessing renewable energy.

What Does a Solar Inverter Do?

Inverters, such as our recommended Fronius solar inverters, convert the direct current (DC) energy generated by your panels into alternating current (AC) electricity used by your home.

Your system can’t make use of the energy generated from solar panels or stored in batteries without an inverter. So, the best inverter to use for those wanting to install a battery is a Hybrid “battery ready” inverter that is reliable and powerful, such as the Fronius Gen 24 Plus Inverter. If you are not planning on installing a battery in the next few years, a more cost effective option is the Fronius Primo Inverter. Made for Single Phase homes, both are available in various sizes from 3 to 8.2 kilowatts, and like all products we choose to work with, the Fronius Gen24 Plus and Fronius Primo are of the highest quality and offer an impressive array of features. Ultimately, performance, lifespan and low maintenance costs mean savings in the long run. Both inverters come with an impressive 10 Year warranty and are made in Austria.

Need More Information?

We understand that making the right choices when looking for a solar panel system can be challenging. Each home and commercial property has different needs according to a variety of factors.

Whether you’re looking at an inverter like the Fronius Primo or a battery system like the Tesla Powerwall 2, we recommend speaking with our experienced support staff or one of our Clean Energy Council-accredited solar installers & designers. Our staff can answer any of the questions you may have.

5 Benefits of Installing Solar Panels Sunshine Coast

Investment in solar power for your home is of benefit to you and the planet. Whether you choose a hybrid grid solar system or completely off-grid, the pros of solar power outweigh any cons. Logic Solar would like to introduce you to why we think it makes perfect sense to harness the power of the sun.

Solar Energy Sunshine Coast

As the name of the place implies, the sun shines brightly on the Sunshine Coast. So, utilising the gift that Mother Nature has graciously afforded us is what we believe in. Here are five benefits to consider when thinking about installing solar panels with battery storage in your home.

1. Help the Environment

The first reason many people consider installing solar panels is that it is the cleanest form of renewable energy. You’ll be assisting Australia in reaching its Renewable Energy Target (RET) by dramatically reducing your household carbon footprint.

2. Save Money

Despite the initial setup costs, installing solar panels with batteries in your house is proven to save money in the long run. For this reason alone, it makes good financial sense. In addition, a hybrid grid solar system will allow you to store energy, which can be used at night time or during poor weather when your solar is not producing energy, or if you are consuming more power than you are producing. You could dramatically reduce or even eliminate your power bill.

3. Government Rebates & Other Incentives

There are various rebates and other incentives available, each of which makes installing solar panels in the home cheaper for the consumer. Eligibility for the Federal government’s Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) and Queensland’s regional solar feed-in tariff are both determined by location. Therefore, it’s best to speak to the experts to find out what is available to you.

4. Very Little Maintenance Required

Once your solar panel system is set up there is little maintenance required to keep it operational. We suggest you lightly clean your solar panels twice a year to ensure no debris is obstructing the sunlight. Understanding the Rebate for Solar Panels Sunshine Coast

If the good news is that solar power can save you on your energy bills, the great news is that there are rebates available to ease your start-up costs. There are federal and state rebates available for Logic Solar’s systems which can significantly reduce the cost of purchase and installation.

Solar System Sunshine Coast: Federal Government Rebate

People living in Queensland are eligible for the Australian Government solar panel rebate, otherwise known as an STC (Small-Scale Technology) rebate or “financial incentive” - by meeting two basic requirements. Firstly, solar panels and inverters must be approved and registered by the Clean Energy Council (CEC). Secondly, the installer must be CEC-accredited.

All products we install are mid to high-end quality and all are CEC-approved. Likewise, all our installers at Logic Solar are fully licensed Electricians and CEC-accredited professionals, who have helped thousands of people throughout Queensland and NSW with their solar needs. They are all direct employees of Logic Solar - no sub-contractors - ensuring our high standards are met.

Your rebate will vary according to a couple of factors. These include your location and the size of your solar system in Sunshine Coast. We recommend contacting us to figure out your sizing needs. We can also help make you aware of the rebate you might be entitled to. Generally speaking, Queenslanders can expect to save up to a third under the Federal Government’s rebate.

Queensland Government Rebates

Queensland Government rebates are currently unavailable, but that may change. These include a battery rebate, grants for batteries, and interest-free loans for solar panels. While these have been halted, the news is not all bad at the State Government level.

Queenslanders may take advantage of incentives in the form of solar feed-in tariffs available through your Energy provider. This is where you receive a set figure for every kWh of power your solar system exports back to the energy grid.

As with the Federal Government rebate, how much you receive is determined by your location within Queensland. For example, those living on the Sunshine Coast will have their rate set by their electricity retailer. You can usually expect between 6 and 12 cents per kilowatt.

ON-GRID, OFF-GRID AND HYBRID SOLAR ENERGY EXPLAINED

It all begins with an idea.

When it comes to installing a solar power system, there are many decisions to make. When installing a renewable energy system, you’re investing in equipment that will last many years, which means that you need to be confident in the system and provider you choose to partner with.

All solar power systems work on the same basic principles. At its core, solar energy takes the energy produced from the sun and converts it into the type of energy that can power your home or business.

Your solar panels consist of solar cells which convert sunlight into Direct Current (DC) electricity thereby producing clean, renewable energy.  The solar inverter receives the DC electricity from the solar panels. As most homes run on Alternating Current (AC) electricity, the inverter converts the DC electricity into AC electricity so that it can be used in your home.

Depending on the type of system, the excess solar energy produced can either be fed into the electricity grid for credits or stored in a variety of different battery storage systems.

TYPES OF SOLAR POWER SYSTEMS

On Grid (or Grid-tie) system is a system that is connected to an existing power grid. This is the most common solar energy set-up in Australia. On-Grid solar power systems use inverters to convert the electricity produced by solar panels to the same voltage and frequency as grid power and to synchronise the systems. On Grid solar power systems do not need batteries, they use either solar inverters or micro inverters and are connected to the public electricity grid. Any excess solar power that is generated is then exported to the electricity grid and you usually get paid a feed-in-tariff (FiT) or credits for the energy that you feed back into the grid.

Off-grid system is also known as a stand-alone power system. Off Grid solar energy systems require specialised off-grid inverters and battery systems that are large enough to store energy for a few days at a time. It is possible to manage off grid solar power systems without a back-up generator, due diligence must be taken to ensure the energy demand aligns to the amount of energy stored in the batteries. The right renewable energy system for your home or business will depend on your energy consumption patterns, your location and what you want to achieve from solar battery storage and energy supply.

Hybrid solar power systems offer the best of both worlds. It generates power in the same way that on-grid systems do, the difference lies in being connected to a battery as well as the grid.  Hybrid solar power systems use special hybrid batteries and inverters that are capable of storing energy for use later.  Hybrid solar power systems are configured so that your home or business uses solar first, then the power stored in the battery, then as a last resort – grid power.  Excess energy produced by the solar panels are stored by the battery and once the battery is full, the excess electricity is sold to the grid.

Your choice of an off-grid, on-grid or hybrid solar power system will determine your access to electricity, the equipment that is needed for excess production, as well as what happens when the power grid goes down. It also dictates how you will be billed for electricity.

YOUR GUIDE TO SOLAR POWER SYSTEMS

It all begins with an idea.

Thinking about choosing solar power? Here you’ll learn more about how solar power works and how it can benefit your home and/or your business as well as the environment. Solar energy systems are more accessible, affordable and easier to install than ever before. Australia has the highest uptake of solar globally, with more than 21% of homes with rooftop solar PV.

What is Solar Power?Solar power is produced when energy from the sun is converted into electricity or used to heat various substances. Solar energy can also be used to create solar fuels such ashydrogen. The process of converting sunlight into electricity using PV systems produces zero greenhouse gas emissions. Solar Photovoltaic (also known as solar PV) converts sunlight directly into electricity using a technology known as a semiconductor cell or solar PV cell.Solar thermal converts sunlight into heat (also known as thermal energy), which can be used for a variety of purposes including creating steam to drive an electricity generator.

What are the main components of a Solar Power system installation?Solar Panels – There are two main types of solar panels – polycrystalline or mono crystalline. Each type has its own unique advantages and disadvantages, and the solar panel type best suited for your installation will depend on factors specific to your own property and desired system characteristics.

The Inverter – There are three types of inverters, a string inverter (around the size of a brief case) or micro inverters, which are approximately the size of a book. A string inverter is installed on a wall and all the solar panels connect to it. A micro inverter goes on the back of each solar panel. Central inverters are for applications such as large arrays installed on buildings, industrial facilities as well as field installations – they are basically just a very large string inverter.

Mounting Equipment – the racking is what is securely attached to your roof supports, and what your solar panels are mounted on. Mounting your PV panels is of critical importance.First, you need to mount the panels where they’ll get maximum sunshine over the course of a year.

How Solar WorksYour solar panels consist of solar cells which convert sunlight into Direct Current (DC)electricity thereby producing clean, renewable energyThe solar inverter receives the DC electricity from the solar panels. As most homes run on Alternating Current (AC) electricity, the inverter converts the DC electricity into AC electricity so that it can be used in your home. Your meter box then feeds the newly converted AC electricity into your home. Any excess electricity that is generated but is not consumed (used) is then fed into one of two

places depending on the particular solar power system that you choose (On Grid, Off Grid, or Hybrid solar power system)

The Battery: if you’ve included a battery as part of your solar energy system, the excess electricity generated will feed into your battery and stored to be used in your home later –the storage capacity will depend on the type of battery you choose. When the battery is full, the excess clean electricity gets sent to the grid.

The Grid: If you do not have a battery as part of your solar energy system, any excess solar power that you generate is exported to the electricity grid and you usually get paid a feed-in-tariff (FiT) or credits for the energy you export.

BENEFITS OF SOLAR RENEWABLE ENERGY

It all begins with an idea.

unsplash-image-0GbrjL3vZF4.jpg

Did you know? The Australian continent has the highest solar radiation per square metre of any continent as well as some of the best solar energy resource in the world…so it simply makes sense to want to harness the power of this natural resource whilst at the same time reduce our greenhouse gas and CO2 emissions. It’s time to go solar, and here are just a few reasons why;

Save Money by using Renewable Energy

And for even better news, now the average residential solar system is cheaper than ever, meaning that the average household can install a significantly bigger solar power system than was previously thought. With this reduction in overall cost for solar energy, homes and businesses stand to save even more on electricity bills.

Solar Power is a Source of Clean Energy

The most commonly known fact about solar energy is that it represents a cleangreen source of energy. In the increasingly green climate, it’s no surprise that reducing your carbon footprint and adding to Australia’s Renewable Energy Target (RET) is a priority for many homeowners and businesses alike. Solar energy is the cleanest, most abundant source of renewable energy, it is non-polluting and is sustainable and limitless, unlike fossil fuels.

Operational Benefits of using Solar Power

For business, in particular, utilising a renewable energy source is of particular benefit. Not only can you increase productivity (the use of phones, laptops, equipment) without having to worry about the power bill, also, the reduced power bills overall mean that more of your funds are available to spend on growing your business.

Increase the Value of your Home/Business

In the increasingly green climate, investing in a solar power system could be a great asset when it comes to selling your home or business at a later date. Many Australians believe homes with solar are more valuable than the equivalent house without. The value added to your home by installing a solar power system can depend on the quality of solar panels installed as well as the number of panels installed. There are different types of materials available on the market today and taking into consideration the quality when making this type of investment is very important.

Solar Power Systems are Low Maintenance

Solar panels generally require very little maintenance to function. The only thing they need is light cleaning to make sure dirt, leaves, and other debris aren’t obstructing the sun’s rays. It is generally recommended that you perform a quick solar panel cleaning between a couple of times per year. The good news is that this doesn’t require much work at all.  In general, maintaining your solar panels is pretty easy. Just be sure to get a good warranty and good insurance and you’ll enjoy clean renewable energy for years to come.
